Solo exhibition by Christian Bonnefoi "The race of a hare" at the Atelier Hermès in Seoul, South Korea, from March 24 to May 28, 2023.
At the heart of the Hermès House in Seoul, Korea, is an exhibition space dedicated to contemporary art. Under the artistic direction of Soyeon Ahn, the Atelier Hermès devotes most of its programming to Korean contemporary art, including the winners of the Hermès Foundation Missulsang, while also offering a few counterpoints to artists from other horizons.
The 2023 season opens with an exhibition dedicated to Christian Bonnefoi, whose first project is in Korea. Entitled "The Race of a Hare", the exhibition brings together nineteen works from six emblematic series by the artist who, born in 1948, has sought to renew the very concept of painting, which until now has been defined by its two-dimensionality. In the mid-1970s, Christian Bonnefoi took up collage, cutting and linking the motifs on his canvases with other media to play with transparency. In this way, he liberated painting from its two dimensions with works that reveal its other side. In Seoul, the public will be able to discover pieces from the Dos series, inspired by the reliefs of Matisse, whose vision was a founding factor in Bonnefoi's approach. Other pieces will provide an insight into his singular practice, which he has also documented as an art historian and author.
