Brankica Žilović was born in Serbia in 1974
She lives and works in Paris
She has been exhibiting at galerie Oniris since 2024
Brankica Žilović is known for her textile wall installations. In a veritable cosmogony featuring atlases, celestial cartographies and other drifting territories, she tells us all about the complexity, fragility and precariousness of the contemporary world.
« Any form of cartographic translation appeals to me because it's a means of projection, a drawing, a space in which I intervene. I modify data.»
Brankica sews, weaves and embroiders, creates installations, compositions and drawings. Oblivion, loss and degeneration, the driving forces behind her work, are nothing less than calls for new beginnings. The repetitive, obsessive nature of her work dilates time, giving it an almost expiatory dimension.
The embroideries on books, maps, photos and archive documents reveal a work based on the imaginary, but also invite us to question or become aware of current events.
After an academic career at the Ecole National Supérieure des Beaux-arts in Belgrade, she went on to study at the Ecole des Beaux-arts in Paris, where she attended the workshops of Vladimir Veličković and Dominique Gauthier.
